A dark and dismal evening for the opening set of fixtures in this the 10th season of Under 15 cricket. There were some early season problems, the late withdrawal of the Stockingford A.A. team has caused some extra open dates, but there are still ten teams in the league. There were wins for Nuneaton, Ambleside, Ansley, and Atherstone, their came conceded by Fillongley.
Nuneaton 97 for 2, (20 pts) beat Austrey 96 for 5 (3 pts) by 8 wickets.
Austrey, front runners in the league for many years, lost a thriller at Nuneaton, who struck a boundary four off the final delivery to win. C. Avill of Austrey had made 50 not out M. Greenwood made 60 in Nuneaton’s spirited reply.
Griff & Coton 14’s 85 for 6 (4 pts) lost to Ansley 88 for 4 (20 pts) by 6 wickets
Ansley had the choice of innings, but elected to field first on a dark evening. Ross Aitkin put up some fierce resistance, going in first wicket down and falling for a fine 25 dismissed in the last over. He was well supported by O. Biggs (15) in the early stages, the score at 18 overs 85 for 6. Ansley started badly, losing Webb, Walker and Lynch while making 11. Aitkin had taken all three of these wickets. Marcus Robinson and Jack Simms added 26 for the 3rd wicket, and Jack Garratt joined Robinson in an all out assault in the gathering gloom. Robinson (47 not out) and Garratt (16 not out) saw Ansley home with 3 overs and 6 wickets to spare.
Bulkington 64 for 6 (3 pts) lost to Ambleside 65 for 3 (20 pts) by 7 wickets
All credit to the Bulkington club, who despite all the odds, managed to turn out a team for this game, They made a creditable 64 for 6 off 18 overs, Ambleside replied with 65 for 3.
Atherstone v Fillongley.
Atherstone were awarded 20 points when Fillongley notified the league that they would not be competing in the first week of the season.
A bright but cold evening for the second week of the season, Atherstone now leading the table after this group of matches. There were wins for Bedworth, Atherstone, Austrey and Fillongley, this could be one of the hardest fought seasons thus far.
Bedworth 113 for 4 (20 pts) beat Ansley 107 for 3 (5 pts) by 6 runs.
A good contest played in the biting East wind at Birch Coppice. There was a combined team batting effort from Bedworth, who were pleased with their 113 for 4. After losing a wicket in the opening over, Marcus Robinson and Adam Walker added 88, but Ansley could not quite manage to beat the 113, making 107 for 3 off their 18 overs.
Austrey 90 for 5 (20 pts) beat Griff & Coton 15’s 84 for 6 (5 pts) by 6 runs
Austrey made up for their lapse against Nuneaton the previous week, winning by a narrow margin against Griff & Coton 15’s, who were having their first outing. Austrey owed much to James Beeson, who made 32 not out, R. Aitkin taking 2 for 8. Griff chased hard, but made 84 for 6, M. Hall making 22 in a gallant effort.
Fillongley 104 for 5 (20 pts) beat Griff & Coton 14’s 59 for 9 (3 pts) by 45 runs
M. Lennon made 23 of Fillongley’s 104 for 5, Tizik taking 2 for 11. This proved a few too many for a young Griff & Coton 14’s who replied with 59 for 9. Luke Duggins took 3 for 10. Fillongley could yet rue the fact that they did not turn out for the previous week’s fixture with Atherstone
Bulkington 56 all out (2 pts) lost to Atherstone 57 for 3 (20 pts) by 7 wickets.
All credit to John Turner and the Bulkington club who, after great difficulty, still managed to raise a side for this clash with Atherstone. Their 56 all out was eclipsed by Atherstone who made 57 for 3.

The bad weather which had hit the local region over the weekend caused problems for some of the Under 15’s teams. Two games were cancelled due to waterlogged grounds, Fillongley v Bulkington and Griff & Coton 15’s v Bedworth. Atherstone took full advantage with a win over Nuneaton, and Ambleside also prospered with a win v Griff & Coton 14’s
Nuneaton 63 for 3 (2 pts) lost to Atherstone 164 for 2 (20 pts) by 101 runs
Atherstone continue on their merry way, they made a massive 164 runs with B. Arnold (60) J. Smith (57) and S. Smart (30*) leading the way. Nuneaton batted out the 18 overs for 63 for 3.
Ambleside 96 for 2 (20 pts) beat Griff & Coton 14’s 28 all out (0 pts) by 68 runs
Just up the road at Ambleside, the home side were in good form against a young and inexperienced Griff & Coton 14’s, who could not match Ambleside’s 96 for 2 off 18 overs.

Rain had washed out the Saturday league game at Fillongley, and their National Village clash with Ansley on Sunday. The third casualty was this Under 15 game v Bulkington.

The “Millennium” Under 15 league now gives way the league cricket, most of the grounds stage Warwickshire League games on Bank Holiday Monday (25th May)
The heavy showers forecast for the late afternoon duly arrived, washing out the Ambleside v Ansley fixture, along with Griff & Coton 14 v Nuneaton, and bringing the Fillongley v Griff & Coton 15’s to a premature end. Atherstone won at Bedworth, and have a 32 point lead at the top of the table. They face their two main rivals Ambleside and Austrey in their last two games.
Bedworth 91 for 8 (3 pts) lost to Atherstone 94 for 2 (20 pts) by 8 wickets.
Atherstone gave themselves a good chance of the title by beating Bedworth at Atherstone. Set a target of 92 to win, they made 94 for 2, continuing their unbeaten run of the 2009 season.
Fillongley 134 for 2 (6 pts) drew with Griff & Coton 15’s 29 for 2. ( 2 pts) Match abandoned after 4 overs.
Great disappointment for Fillongley, Matt Smith (54) and Mitch Lennon (44*) added 117 for the second wicket, taking the score to 134 for 2. The rains arrived after 4 overs of the Griff & Coton 15 innings, the game abandoned.

The penultimate week of the season brought problems galore. Both Bulkington and Fillongley were unable to muster enough players, conceding their games to Griff & Coton 15’s and Ansley respectively, and Austrey were hit by a cloudburst, washing out their fixture with Bedworth.
In the only fixture played, Atherstone clinched the league title with a win over their closest rivals Ambleside.
Ambleside 70 for 9 (3 pts) lost to Atherstone 121 for 4 (20 pts)
Atherstone continue to impress, beating second placed Ambleside by 51 runs, continuing their unbeaten run in the league. They clinched the league title with one week still left to play, and they will have a home K.O. Semi-Final. They could play any one of four clubs, Ambleside, Austrey, Bedworth or Nuneaton. The Plate Semi-Final position is unclear, but the Minnows Cup will be fought out by three clubs, Fillongley, Bulkington or Griff 14’s

The final week of the season, and the league positions of the various clubs now decides who plays who min the Semi-Finals of the K.O. next week. The major losers of the final week were Bedworth, their game v Nuneaton at Nuneaton called off due to an unfit pitch. They drop from 4th to 5th and out of the main K.O. into the plate. Griff and Coton 15 jump into 3rd place from 5th. Atherstone rounded off their league season with a win over Austrey.
Atherstone 127 for 2 (20 pts) beat Austrey 71 all out (2 pts) by 56 runs
Atherstone finished their league season unbeaten, Billy Arnold smashing a fine 50 and with good support from the rest of the order, Atherstone made 127 for 2, beyond the reach of the Austrey boys who finish 4th. This sets up a repeat in the K.O. next Monday, same teams, same ground.
Griff and Coton 15’s 62 for 3 (20 pts) beat Griff and Coton 14;s 60 for 6 (3 pts) by 7 wickets
This game went to form, the win for the Griff 15’s a significant one. They jumped from 5th into 3rd and gain an away tie with Ambleside next week in the main K.O.
Fillongley ( 0 pts) conceded to Ambleside (20 pts)
Fillongley called off this game late last week, they could not muster enough players to make a side.
Ambleside retain second place.
Bulkington 35 all out (1 pt) lost to Ansley 37 for 3 (20 pts)
The long suffering John Turner had to watch as his scratch side were swept aside by Ansley.
